Small-Town Driving Tour

Three Forks, Livingston, Big Timber, Columbus and Red Lodge

175 miles

Spend a day exploring a handful of the charming small towns in Montana’s Yellowstone Country — or use this day-trip itinerary as inspiration for longer visits in one or more of these welcoming communities.

Start your journey in Three Forks, named for the three rivers — the Madison, Gallatin and Jefferson — that converge nearby to form the Missouri River. Stop at the Three Forks Café for breakfast before taking in a bit of small-town history at the Headwaters Heritage Museum. Explore history and natural beauty at two fascinating state parks outside Three Forks: Missouri Headwaters State Park, where the storied Missouri River begins, and Madison Buffalo Jump State Park, a stunning site of Native American culture.

From Three Forks, head east on Interstate 90 to the town of Livingston, Montana. Livingston has long been a hub for artists, writers and outdoor enthusiasts. Stroll through downtown and take in the storefronts that retain the genuine Western character they’ve had since they were built in the 1880s and 1890s. Livingston has an impressive culinary scene, so consider grabbing lunch at Los Pinos, Gil’s Goods or—if it’s a Thursday, Friday or Saturday—the Mint Bar and Grill before heading to Bearpaw Outfitters for horseback riding or a fly-fishing lesson.

The Historic Grand Hotel, Big Timber

Next up is the town of Big Timber, east of Livingston on I-90. This farming and ranching town — with great fishing spots nearby — has a charming downtown worth a leisurely stroll. Check out the historic Grand Hotel, Two Rivers Gallery and, for some local history, the Crazy Mountain Museum, which features a rodeo exhibit and a 1912 schoolhouse on site. Then head to Cole Drug Store and Soda Fountain for a sundae, shake or float — they’ve been crafting ice cream treats since 1935.

Continue east on I-90 to reach Columbus, and step back in time at the Museum of the Beartooths, with exhibits that give a look at life in Stillwater Country over the past century. Discover some local color at the New Atlas Bar — the 1916 building’s interior is wonderfully preserved and features a renowned taxidermy collection that includes a two-headed calf. Columbus sits near the confluence of the Yellowstone and Stillwater rivers, making it a great spot for fishing and tubing.

From Columbus, head south on Montana Highway 78 for a scenic drive to Red Lodge. The road skirts the Beartooth Mountains, delivering views of the majestic, jagged peaks at every turn. Soon enough you’ll find yourself in Red Lodge, a welcome — and welcoming — sight after a long day of exploring. Enjoy a delicious dinner at PREROGATIvE Kitchen, Carbon County Steakhouse or Red Lodge Pizza Co., and then put your feet up at the historic Pollard Hotel before turning in for a great night’s sleep.
