It's true that Montana's Yellowstone Country is a winter wonderland, however, if you’re not one who loves outdoor adventure, you can still enjoy a winter vacation. In fact, winter wellness is a great way to make an out-of-the-ordinary trip! Focusing on low-impact exercise, relaxing experiences, and good food contributes to a soothing vacation for the mind, body and soul.

Hiking Around Bozeman

In Bozeman, Gallatin Valley Land Trust has several trails accessible in winter, including Triple Tree Trail, Snowfill Recreation Area (one of our favorites for dog walks) and Sourdough Canyon Trail. The Gallagator Trail, which runs from Montana State University to downtown Bozeman is another in-town favorite. Crosscut Mountain Sports Center rents snowshoes for those looking for a bit more challenging terrain and allows guests to hike along their groomed trails.

Snowshoeing in Yellowstone

In West Yellowstone, you can rent snowshoes from Freeheel and Wheel and trek into Yellowstone National Park, or along one of the many Forest Service roads. It’s incredibly quiet this time of year and a lovely way to commune with nature.

Exploring State Parks

Missouri Headwaters and Madison Buffalo Jump State Parks are both located at lower elevations and generally don’t have as much snow as some of the other areas in our region. Both are great for getting out and walking, just be sure to wear footwear with good traction!

Relaxing in a Hot Springs

We’re fortunate to have three hot springs in our region: Yellowstone Hot Springs, Chico Hot Springs, and Bozeman Hot Springs. These three hot springs are well-developed, with multiple pools at varying temperatures and some with cold plunges that get your heart rate going!

Staying Hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential during the cold, dry weather, and we have some great options. Tumblewood Teas in Big Timber offers a large selection of loose-leaf teas, all available to order online. Steep Mountain Tea House also creates specialty blends, which you can order online or enjoy in-house at their Bozeman location. Cold-pressed juices are also popular at The Well Juicery and Nektar Juice Bar in Bozeman. (You can even order specialty juice cleanses!)

Wellness Getaways

If you’re looking for an immersive experience, Chico Hot Springs, Sage Lodge, and Mountain Sky Guest Ranch all offer wellness experiences onsite. Relaxation is guaranteed with hiking in their backyard, spa services, delicious meals and comfortable rooms.

Retail Therapy

Of course, you can find drop-in yoga classes in most of our charming towns, along with spa services, healthy fare and a quiet pace. And speaking of quaint, we would argue that a little retail therapy is a lovely way to unwind. Explore the unique boutiques, art galleries and outdoor retailers in our downtowns.

We hope you’ll join us for a wellness weekend — or week!
