Spring Awakening in Montana's Yellowstone Country

Spring has sprung in Montana’s Yellowstone Country, and we’ve had some stunning bluebird days. Soon, the wildflowers will start popping (you can find some of our favorite hikes here), and the wildlife babies in Yellowstone are already being born.
Outdoor Adventure
Hyalite Recreation Area just outside of Bozeman opens to vehicles tomorrow — if you haven’t explored this popular playground, spring is an excellent time. The waterfalls are running fast, the fish are hungry, and it’s not too hot for hiking.
Next week, the Beartooth Highway is scheduled to open (weather permitting), providing access to Beartooth Basin, a summer ski area in the Beartooth Mountains. For intermediate to advanced skiers and riders, the chance for some additional turns is welcome. And, if you’re in the area, the Bear Creek Downs, the pig races at Bear Creek Saloon in Bridger kick off Memorial Day weekend as well!

It’s also the prime of whitewater rafting season. Runoff from the mountains increases flows, and the Gallatin, Yellowstone and Stillwater rivers are all open to rafting, and there are several guide services to ensure your safe passage.
What's New at Big Sky Resort
Big Sky Resort’s golf course opens today, and the full resort on June 13. This will be the first year the new Lone Peak Tram will offer scenic rides, and with the new glass observation deck at Kircliff, you’ll have unparalleled views. The resort also has lift-served mountain biking, hiking, zip lining and more! Big Sky’s summer season is a bit of a secret, and trust us, it’s worth the trip!

The Finer Side; Art and Culture
From a cultural perspective, Art Walks are back in Red Lodge, Bozeman and Livingston. Each month, new exhibits and the chance to meet the artists in person make these events popular community gatherings. (And the wine and nibbles are fun too!)
The Shane Center hosts Yellowstone Country’s Got Talent, a family-friendly talent show featuring singing, dancing and even circus performances! Enjoy ten contestants as they compete for cash prizes and the title of champion! Also at the Shane Center, the free summer outdoor concert series kicks off on June 4th!
And of course, ’tis the season for farmers markets! There are twelve different markets in our region, beginning June 3 in Livingston and Big Sky. You can find a list of all the markets here.
Prepare for Changing Weather
Remember, the weather can change quickly in Montana. Be sure to pack a rain jacket, a fleece layer, a sun hat, a warm hat, warm socks, weather-appropriate shoes, lightweight gloves and sunscreen!
Happy Spring!
