That road, now called the All American Highway was voted by Outside magazine as the #1 most scenic drive in the continental United States. South of Red Lodge is the western town of Cody, Wyoming reached via the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. Both Red Lodge and Cody are just a few hours drive from Cooke City. Winter time transforms the area into a skiers and snowmobilers playground. Cooke City is accessible via a drive across the northern part of Yellowstone from Mammoth that is the only road open to vehicles during the winter.
