Named for the Crow Indians, this small and scenic valley community below the Beartooth Mountain foothills is a popular stop along the way (Montana Highway 78) between Red Lodge and Columbus, about a one-hour drive from Billings. Adventures frequently begin in Absarokee–including rafting and fishing the Stillwater and Yellowstone rivers, hiking in the nearby Absarokee-Beartooth Wilderness and horseback riding with Paintbrush Adventures. Relax and unwind at The Big Yellow House, a charming bed-and-breakfast listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Take the scenic route: The stunning Beartooth Front Scenic Drive passes right through town, the Bridger Creek Backcountry Drive begins just outside of town, and the Absarokee Scenic Loop offers 40 miles of panoramic splendor beginning and ending right in town, where you'll find basic services as well as some local Montana treasures.
Absarokee is home to the Montana BBQ Cook-Off, held annually the last Sunday in June. Enjoy good fun and good flavor at this weekend-long event.
