When the prairies meet the Rockies you’ll know you’ve entered Yellowstone Country and it’s time to step off the beaten track and take the scenic route. Yellowstone Country’s backroads are something not to be missed. Plan your drive to Bozeman through Clyde Park and Wilsall, which takes you through the Shields Valley, between the Crazy and Bridger Mountain ranges along Montana Highway 86. Staying along Montana 89, you’ll see the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and Crazy Mountains. If hiking is your love, be sure to explore numerous trails along the way. In the eastern portion of this corridor, you can take part in the “Great Montana Sheep Drive.” On the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, every year, the town of Reed Point swells from about 200 to as many as several thousand as crowds gather to watch the running of the sheep in what has been described as the, “Sheep Drive Capital of the World.”
